A Story of Country Targeting in Google Adwords PPC Campaign
Posted By - Mark Spenser

I came across with an experience regarding country targeting my Google Adwords PPC Campaign. I would like to share that experience with all of you.

My Conversation with Google Adwords Support Team

Query:

Dear Google Adwords team,

I am running a PPC Campaign since last long time. I have targeted Canada and France Regions for my Campaign. Now when I am searching my keywords from google.ca or google.fr from an US based IP, I am still being able to see my ad. I am not getting why my ad are showing from an US based IP? Can you please guide me for this concern?

Best Regards.

Reply from Google:

Hello,

This may be long, but I hope you'll find the read, worth your time :)

It is important to know that in the Google Network, ads are displayed to users based on the user's IP address. For this reason, it is likely that users with Canada/France IP addresses may see an ad that you targeted to Canada/France when they visit Google Network sites based in other countries.

Also, country and territory targeted ads may show to users that are outside of your targeted region if they search on the appropriate country-specific Google domain. In this case, the user's IP address will not be taken into account. For example, if your campaign targets Canada, any user located worldwide may see your ad on Google.ca, which is Google's Canada-specific domain. However, searches on Google.com will take into account the user's IP address in order to deliver the appropriate country and territory ads.

If you don't want your ad showing on a country-specific domain to users outside of your targeted country, you can change your campaign's location targeting from the country/territory option to the regional or customized option. You'll be reaching the same audience, but your ad won't show on Google.ca and Google.fr to users with IP addresses outside of your selected regions.

Hope most of this makes sense.

Best to you

Conclusion is:

If you are planning to target particular country for your PPC campaign at that time do country targeting by selecting all regions/territories of that particular country rather than targeting whole country.

For ex. If I am targeting Canada than I will be selecting all territories/regions of Canada country rather than selecting whole Canada Country. (This Option is available in Campaign settings while selecting countries)

By this we can avoid showing our ads on other country network even from country specific domain. (For ex. If anybody will access Google.CA outside Canada than our ads will not be served by Google.)

Hope this will help you out while selecting particular country and showing ads in targeted region only. As well as Kindly share this article with your friends.
