Posted By - Mark Spenser

There are plenty of things that make a website attractive and friendly to use and one of the most important button that mostly web designers forget to place is a Back Button. Back buttons are a must on every web page so that the user can flip from the next to the previous web pages easily. Now-a-days, it is very common to see a ‘back to home’ or ‘back to start’ or simply ‘back’ buttons on the website.

Let’s admit that all of us basically use the skim and scan technique while surfing the internet as there are loads of information. Therefore, mostly if you find not according to your interest you simply use the easy way out of the website i.e. through back button. In fact, the back button takes you the previous page of the website that might be of your interest and keeps you on the tracks. The common argument over here is mainly that the web-designer doesn’t want the visitor to go, but that doesn’t mean that you hamper the usability of your site by blocking the viewer from going back and forth. The outcome would be that the viewer might simply stop visiting your website if it does not have good usability.

Therefore, one of the key factors for better usability of your website is to provide back button to your viewers. You can certainly not stop the viewers from leaving your website, but the adding the back button will at least make them come back to your website. However, besides this there are several of interesting usages of back button that you can prove to be favorable for your website. Place your company’s logo beside the back button; this is because a user will certainly look at your logo before going back. This will create a positive impact and might make the visitor come back to your site.

Also make sure that the logo that you place near the back button is clickable. The visitor might get interested in knowing about the company a bit more before leaving and hence, this link will enable you to make the visitor stay longer the website. You can also trace who leaves your website and if any particular trend is observed that you can make enhancement in your web pages regarding it. For instance, most of the people clicking on the back button are from a particular location, and then you can address the problem and fix it by researching on the kinds of facilities that the people from that particular location are expecting from your website.
